Biography:
Mess Noise b: 1981, is an Australian / Kenyan self taught artist, based in Sydney (Gadigal) Australia and Nairobi Kenya.
His paintings and drawings involve an approach that combines figuration and abstraction through bold colour, urgent lines and mark making in a non-traditional way. These works have the iconography of neo-expressionism with a graffiti street style that has a casual approach to materials most often in mixed media combining newsprint, enamel, acrylic and oil sticks blending fine art and the industrial. His sculpture work is focused on assemblages of found and commercial objects an experimentation with everyday materials transitioning them into contemporary modern art, a thought process of the ready made.
His work is influenced by artists such as Rashid Johnson, Eddie Martinez, Adam Pendleton, Cy Twombly and De Kooning. In his paintings, Mess explores the themes of life, death, religion, personal experience, and what he calls deep thoughts.
Artist Statement:
When I paint there is a degree of pre planning long in my mind but not on paper, the entire drawing and painting exercise delivered to the canvas is also spontaneous based on deep thoughts at the very moment and developing the abstract composition whilst later placing the figurative elements. It could be considered a personal state of mind utopia I’m looking to reach in each piece.
I also think of things that have influenced my life in the past from an early age to those that that may be of influence now. The painting process is a continual process of deep thought creating an ongoing biographical narrative through my work. There is great consideration to art history and how the painting process can be interpreted to the modern age. No one needs to feel obliged to understand my work or to think anything. Its open to interpretation of the viewer.
